For our first Eid of the year, we embarked on a Riyadh to Bahrain family road trip, an adventure filled with exploration and fun.... Everyone always raves about taking a quick trip to Bahrain for the weekend and we had yet to take advantage of this island paradise. Renowned for its laid-back vibe and cultural melange, Bahrain is a hit among Riyadh dwellers, offering the simple pleasures of a cold beer by the pool and a hearty bacon sandwich.
Top tip: if you are travelling at national holiday times book your accommodation ahead to avoid paying top prices
Setting Off: The Journey Begins
The Riyadh to Bahrain family road trip started with a drive from Riyadh, promising changing landscapes as we headed towards our exciting destination. It's a journey that promises changing landscapes and the excitement of crossing the iconic King Fahd Causeway. The road is a straight line from Riyadh on the Dammam road to... funnily enough... Dammam and then keep heading East until you cross the Causeway into Bahrain.
Venturing to Bahrain: A Guide for the Car-less Traveler
If you're sans car or have a hired one, do check if it’s permitted for a Bahrain jaunt. Here’s how you can make your way:
By Air: The quickest route is a mere 50-minute flight. For prices, a quick online search or a chat with your travel agent should do the trick.
Train and Taxi Combo: Take a train to Dammam, then a taxi across the causeway. Expect to shell out around 600 SAR for a round-trip taxi fare.
Hire a Driver: Opting for a personal driver from Riyadh is pricier but certainly plush, starting from about 1000 SAR.
Coach Travel: For a budget-friendly option, SAPTCO coaches are your go-to, bookable online or at their stations.
With these options, you can tailor your journey to fit your style and budget.
Choosing Your Accommodation in Bahrain
Selecting the right accommodation is a crucial part of planning a Riyadh to Bahrain family road trip. Bahrain offers a range of accommodations to suit every family’s needs. At first glance, it can look a bit corporate but don't lose heart, dear one. From luxury resorts with private beaches and pools to budget-friendly hotels in the heart of the city, there’s something for everyone.
Luxury Resorts: Ideal for those seeking a lavish experience, many luxury resorts are located in the Seef district, known for its upscale shopping and dining.
City Hotels: In the heart of Manama, city hotels offer convenience and accessibility. The Diplomatic Area is perfect for those who prefer a bustling urban vibe.
Boutique Hotels in Muharraq: For a more traditional and cultural experience, consider staying in Muharraq, the old capital of Bahrain.
Amwaj Islands: Perfect for beach lovers and families looking for a serene seaside experience.
Juffair: Known for its vibrant nightlife and a variety of dining options, Juffair is popular among younger travellers and expats.
Adliya: Boasting a bohemian charm, Adliya is a cultural hotspot with art galleries, cafes, and a more laid-back atmosphere.
We ended up staying in the Royal Saray Resort (very nice) and the Novotel was recommended as it has beach access and also the Fraser Suites for Aparthotel vibes (but no beach).
